June Desktop Downloads

June already! Goodness me! I've noticed a trend of florals and greenery in the past few HL (Heartland Lady) desktop downloads, so I went for a slight change of scenery here. This month's photo was taken at one of the ponds along my favorite bike trail, which is populated by many geese during the warmer seasons. They tend to swim away whenever I get near the bank, but don't they create the loveliest patterns in the water? Almost an argyle. :) I love being near the water in summer. When the sun is beating down, it is so refreshing to look out across the cool blue expanse of a pond or lake.

Here is the desktop calendar version.

For this month's quote, the Mary Oliver poem, "Wild Geese," seemed like an obvious choice. My college literature professor shared this poem with our class right before finals week. The first line was such a comfort and seemed to lift some of the exam-induced worry from my shoulders.

Wild Geese

by Mary Oliver

You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain

are moving across the landscapes,

over the prairies and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.

I still dearly love this poem. I have it displayed on my desk, so I can see those reassuring words every day. The poem reminds us that while we are humans who experience despair and loneliness, we are also just beings in the world. Whatever problems we may have are rendered less significant in comparison to the perpetual and ever-changing quality of nature. The natural world is magnificent. It is a gift, and we should pay attention.

'Til next time,
