Honoring Memorial Day

This year, Memorial Day weekend is going to be quite different. No carnival coming to town, no fireworks, no parade with the school bands... but you know, it can still be special. In fact, without all of these showy distractions, we can think more about the purpose of Memorial Day. To remember the brave soldiers who died in service to our country. I think historian Stephen Ambrose puts it best...

So they fought, and won, and we all of us, living and yet to be born, must be forever profoundly grateful.

Here are some things we can do to observe Memorial Day, without the usual hustle and bustle.

  • Visit a memorial or cemetery

  • Go on a picnic

  • Bake an a classic American pie

  • Watch a war movie

I highly recommend From Here to Eternity, the classic film inspired by the James Jones' novel. It details the lives of three Army soldiers (Burt Lancaster, Frank Sinatra, and Montgomery Cliff) stationed in Hawaii before the Pearl Harbor attack. Also stars Deborah Kerr (The King and I) and Donna Reed (It's a Wonderful Life).

Hope you all have a wonderful holiday weekend!

Thank you for stopping by,

Eva
